We used some awful smelling stuff to keep them off, but the buzzing around the ears was enough to drive you crazy even without the bites. The black flies were worse, undetectable in the dusk, smaller than the head of pin, if anybody still knows what pins are, swarms of them, with a vicious bite ten times their size. My father was a pipe smoker in those days, and he sometime lit up and huffed out clouds of tobacco smoke to keep them at bay. Black flies were mainly gone by the end of the June. In a sense we were there on the water because of the bugs. Fish loved them. Swarming bugs put the bass in a feeding frenzy where they didn’t think too deeply about their food. Other fishermen seemed to have much greater success than we did, but then who really knew? We certainly got many more strikes than catches, which I might have taken as a life lesson, but did not at the time. A slight tug on the line, a gentle nibbling, I’d try to gauge the right time to pull back on the line and set the hook, but both my father and I missed the moment more often than not. It must have been after his sophomore year at college when he convinced my parents to go on an over night backpacking trip to climb Mt. Marcy, the highest point in New York State. A college friend had taken him camping and he knew we’d love it. I don’t remember the first trip with George, but there are photos of a trip I took with Mimi and our parents. I must have been ten or eleven years old at the time. We had stopped at one of the park’s many lean-to shelters. It rained a lot in the Adirondack. They were open on one side and had a sleeping shelf at the back. The cooking fire could be in the open on clear days or under the overhang when it rained. Mother suffered from asthma, and walking could be a struggle for her, but she loved it. We always stopped at the first creek we crossed, named by us “Amandine Creek” after the asthma medicine mother took. I could peel the outer layer of bark to make tiny boats that I launched down rocky creeks. My father warned me from cutting the bark all the way around a tree, which would be sure to kill it. When we gathered wood in the evening for our cooking fire, we’d be delighted to find dead birch trees, because its wood gave off colorful flames when it burned. There were also sugar maples and beech trees, red spruce, white pine, white ash, eastern hemlock, black cherry and red maple. I had no idea of their names when I was young, but the rich diversity of the Adirondack forests was remarkable. I did most of my camping later in life, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. Spectacular in their own way, none had the immense variety of the eastern forests, with their nurturing sense of abundance. Higher still, vegetation on the ground grew dense, with witchhobble, a wondrous name for a six to eight foot shrub with white flowers in the spring and red berries through the summer that attracted birds but tasted bitter when I tried them. Poison, my mother told me. Mother’s asthma kept her from making the last leg of the trip up Mt. Marcy. She and father stopped at a ridge and waited while we children made the final ascent. The ground was exposed and the few remaining trees dwarfed. Bare patches of decayed pine needles lay between the rocks, which were covered with mosses and lichens. It was cold at the summit, on even the hottest day of summer, the wind chilling as it whipped through our hair. Range after range of mountains and valleys spread out in all directions. Tiny wild flowers flourished between the rocks. We picked a bouquet for mother, and descended through large boulders, jagged stones and massive, exposed roots. It seemed more precipitous going down. This was my first wilderness, experienced at a time when large parts of the world were still unknown and seemingly impenetrable, inaccessible. A few years later Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hilary would climb Mt. Everest and today debris litters the summit. The magic of unknown nature is gone. The Adirondacks Park was a tame wilderness, with carefully constructed trails and lean-tos, the Indians all gone, the black bear and puma in hiding. There was little real danger. Were we “political?” Finally, he offered to show us “the real Spain.” The next day, the poet took on a slow-paced walking tour of pre-Fascist cultural monuments, closed libraries and clubs where he still had the keys. We stared at light spots on the walls where tapestries were missing, book shelves empty of books, chairs at tables empty of people. The books were seized as subversive, the poet said. The club members arrested as subversives, the paintings and tapestries sold to pay taxes. We went to the steps of a museum where he was afraid to enter. "This is the face of Fascism. You go home and you tell the American people about the real Spain. How can they support this fascist dictator who denies his people every common decency?" The tour ended late that night in a dark, working-class bar near our hotel, where our poet seemed accidentally to run into an old friend, George Matei who was visiting Madrid from Paris. George was on his way back to Paris, and we offered to give him a ride. It was a routine trip until we neared the French border. George suddenly wanted to be let off, said he had to meet some friends and would see us for dinner at a small café in France. And he darted away, leaving his two heavy suitcases in our trunk. It was creepy. I had read a scene like this in a mystery novel, George Hector carrying documents for a mysterious stranger in Eric Ambler’s The Dain Curse, and I wondered how I would stand up to Spanish interrogation. Anti-fascist movies like Rossellini’s Open City were popular after the war, and torture always seemed like a real possibility if you found yourself in the wrong circumstances. Which is where I seemed to find myself. But neither of us wanted to dump George’s bags, and we sailed through the border without any trouble. While I was away McCarthy’s un-American Activities Committee had come to Portland and subpoenaed several Reed professors. Three refused to cooperate, and Reed’s Board of Trustees immediately suspended them. When Stanley Moore, a Marxist Professor of Philosophy, declined to tell the trustees whether or not he was a member of the Communist Party, they fired him. The other two professors told Reed trustees they were not communists and were re-instated. Moore later said he had been a communist in the forties, but had quit the party well before the HUAC hearings in Portland. His refusing to answer the trustees’ questions had been a matter of principle. Moore had received enthusiastic support from students and faculty. The Faculty Council issued a statement that called Moore "among the outstanding members of the faculty in terms of scholarly preparation, objectivity in the presentation of material and general effectiveness in the classroom. " Moore’s firing pleased Portland’s businessmen and bankers who hobnobbed with the trustees. Some had ominously warned that Reed would be closed if the trustees didn’t act. The leading Portland newspaper said the trustees’ action reflected the temper of the times: “should Communists be allowed to teach? "No!" the Reed Trustees roared in reply, "No Communists should teach in the schools of this country, and particularly not at Reed College." A month after his death, Rebel Without A Cause premiered in New York City and then opened across the country. Dean played Jim Stark, promoted as “the bad boy from a good family” in the ad campaign. I discovered Marx quite by accident in the Reed library. Like my great-grandfather, Marx had taken part in the abortive German Republic of 1848 and fled to a life in exile. Marx had been a newspaper editor in Germany and my great-grandfather became a newspaper editor in Chicago. Any similarities ended there. My great-grandfather embraced American democracy and capitalism. Karl Marx chose working class revolution and communism. Marx was not taught at Reed. “Try economics,” the philosophy professors said. But neither Reed’s economics department nor any social science taught Marx. That was pretty much true across the United States in the Fifties, despite the fact that Marx was one of the most influential thinkers of the 19th Century and for better or for worse, his followers in the Twentieth Century still were shaping the destiny of half the people in the world. How could we not study this guy? Our fear of Marx intrigued me. I liked Kant who tried to prove that reason could determine moral behavior. When I studied him under the guidance of a young logic’s professor, Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason turned out to be a very complicated tautology, its conclusions contained in its premises. We students assumed he was too far left. Reed’s Dean of Faculty insisted it was his poor teaching. We told the Dean how much we had learned from Sussman, how much extracurricular work we’d done and how we looked forward to continuing with Sussman. The Dean insisted that when we grew up, we’d agree that Reed had done the right thing. Sussman went on to a distinguished career, serving as chairman of the Rutgers College history department from 1973 to 1979. This incident was another nail in the trust we put in our core institutions like colleges and universities in the late Fifties.
